The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
