Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A new term came to light several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
